A Glimpse into the Future: Night Vision for Mobile Phones

Because of all the capabilities of modern day mobile phones, they are fast becoming the sole, most essential device for many business users. With all the existing technology found in the pocket-sized devices, what else is left? Find the latest mobile phone deals online at Moby1.

Well, night vision, apparently. According to DiscoveryNews, there is a way to append night vision to our beloved smart phones with the use of a paper thin plastic film applied to the mobile phone’s camera. This technology is brought about thanks to the scientist, Franky So, from the University of Florida. A big chunk of the funding reportedly came from the technology bigwigs at DARPA.

“This device can convert any infrared image into a visible image and would weigh no more than a pair of eyeglasses.”

The lightweight film can be used not only in mobile phone cameras but also in car windshields and eyeglasses. Also, it is able to run needing only 3 to 5 volts. The device is able to do without the heavy lenses which need to maintain a vacuum in order to make images visible at night. The technology used comes from the same crop as those found in flat screen TVs. The infrared light is able to enter the film. Of the seven layers present in the film, it is then detected by the first layer and a slight electric charge is produced. The additional 3 to 5 volts goes on to amplify the signal in order to convert it to light that is visible to the eyes.

It is light weight, cheap to produce and very easy to apply since almost all modern smart phones have an existing camera. For the tech buffs out there who just cannot get enough of new features, you have Mr. Franky So and the folks at DARPA to thank for this.
